wheel fitment w/ various brake combinations guide

Postby TBUELL » Thu Jan 16, 2014 2:59 pm

I have been asked time, & again about turbo cast wheel / disc brake fitment on various years of third generation firebird’s / trans am’s, even camaros. So I decided to make this tech article with photos to help you determine what diameter wheels will work on your car. The attached photos will help in identifying the various brake calipers combinations. The information given is for cars in stock form. Keep in mind the newest third gen is 21 years old, so calipers, rear ends etc could have been swapped. Now let’s get started.

1982-1987 F-body’s had only two brake combinations

Front disc with rear drums RPO code (J50)
Front disc with rear disc RPO code (J65)
Please note the rear calipers from 82-87 are cast iron, & mounted on an offset. Both 14” & 15” turbo cast will work on all f-body’s 82-87

1988-1992 F-body’s had three brake combinations

Front disc with rear drums RPO code (J50) both 14” & 15” turbo cast will work

Front disc with rear disc RPO code (J65) only 15” turbo cast will work. The rear caliper is too large for the 14” wheel

Front disc dual piston caliper with rear disc RPO code (1LE) The front caliper is too large for a 15” wheel. However a 15” turbo cast will fit the rear caliper. The rear calipers are the same used on RPO (J65)

1LE front calipers. used on the 1989 turbo t/a, firehawks, B4C (police) Camaro's, & fbodys special ordered with RPO code 1LE. These are very rare, & highly unlikely to ever run across.

Please note the 1LE rear calipers are the same as (88-92) RPO J65. this means 15" wheels will fit the rear of 1LE cars.
